The Shift

June 16, 2026

🧭 For most of my career, security has been a room full of people operating tools, with a few very expensive tools quietly helping them think.

That arrangement is about to invert, and most of the market hasn’t priced it in.

We answered the last decade by buying more. More alerts to triage, more dashboards to watch, more questionnaires to send and file. Each one made sense on the day we bought it. Together they built a profession whose real job, if you follow where the hours actually go, is a tired human in front of a screen deciding what matters.

So ask the quiet question underneath all of it. How fast can that human read? How many screens before the fatigue sets in? And how does any of it keep pace with an attacker who never gets tired and never waits his turn?

It doesn’t. Which is why the next era of this work looks strange to the people who grew up in the old one. The tools stop waiting to be operated. They reason, they act, and the human moves up a level > from running the work to judging the outcome <.

THIS IS NOT A TOOLS RACE. IT IS A RACE OF SPEED.

Risk is being created at machine speed now, in code that ships over a weekend and access that’s granted in an afternoon. You cannot answer that with a quarterly review and one more analyst. In a few weeks at Black Hat I get to show what answering it at the same speed actually looks like. Not a slide. Something running.
